What do people usually wear pheasant and other gamebird hunting?

pheasant hunting
Marcus R asked:

New hunter here. What does one usually wear gamebird hunting, or pheasant hunting in particular? I notice wal-mart has “upland game shirts”/”upland vests” for sale (tan color with safety orange patches). Is this the norm? Would I look like a complete idiot if I wore some deer hunting garb? (a camo jacket with an orange vest)? I’m not asking so much for vanity value but what’s functional and what will work out on the field. thanks for the help!

“Upland game shirts” are simply shirts with gusseted backs and shoulders to allow more freedom of movement to swing a shotgun on the bird. (It’s not required)

The vest is used to carry birds that you’ve shot along with extra shotgun shells and the orange is obviously for safety.

Lots of hunters wear camo jackets with just a blaze vest (assuming the vest has a (bloodproof) game pocket in it for the birds)

No need to go “fancy”…..just make it functional

Wear comfortable pants and shoes/boots as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Good luck and good hunting -

Well you will need a nice pair of hunting boots.I personally like the Redhead uplander 2’s from bass pro. They are warm in the winter and cool in the early deer seasons(it is bow season for deer here in OK and it is like 80 degrees)they are also very comfortable for walking. For pants I wear a pair of carhart overalls with added protection over the knees and shins. They are perfect for stomping through the thick cover that is home to pheasant and quail.Do NOT buy insulated ones, you can always wear long johns if you are too cold. And for the upper body I wear a long sleeve flannel with my game bag over the top.I like Remington game bags the best, they are light and have the front loader pockets.(it is hard to stuff a pheasant in a rear loader, and can sometimes even take 2 people)That doesn’t sound very warm but trust me once you chase a covey of quail for a mile you will regret wearing more than a layer or two.Don’t forget to get yourself a nice pair of gloves.

Here are links to some of the items I listed.

This is the pants,I like the overall style better but something like these is what you want

You will want a gamebag similar to this

I wear boots similar to these. These are a little pricey but they are similar to the

You might not have a bass pro near you,but you can find items similar to these at most outdoor stores.Cabelas it the next best place to Bass pro IMO

wear normal cloths for a sunny fall day. Good boots, jeans, a t-shit and a long sleeve shirt over it. Most states also require you wear some blaze orange, so a blaze orange vest is great. Here ‘bird hunting’ specific vests might be a good buy, they often have a spot for shotgun shells to be stored in loops on the chest, plus have a bag in their back for putting the birds. That’s the one thing your camo jacket might not be able to do. Otherwise a hooded sweatshirt, demin jacket, camo jacket, anythign you want will be fine.
